10/7/10: Chicago Rock & Roll

Time to get you all up to speed on what’s been happening at the Fuzz Factory.  Sorry – students! I’ll get back to grading those paraline maps in a few minutes.

This show is all about my hometown. 100% Chicago rock & roll!

This week, I decided to feature something I know very well. The 90’s Chicago rock music scene. I lived through it and have seen most of these featured bands in concert. I even went to high school with one of these guys and seen many more out and about in the city back then.

I call the 90’s Chicago rock scene as the Last or Final Scene. The reason for this is simple.  The Chicago scene was the first scene to emerge after the Seattle scene took the nation by storm.  After Seattle, the record industry was dead set on finding the “New Seattle.” Chicago was the “New Seatlle” and labels came to town signing one band after another.  Ultimately, the hype ended up creating an implosion and the major labels left town almost as quick as they came.  Only the Smashing Pumpkins gained worldwide success.

There was no signature sound in the Chicago 90’s rock scene.  The early 90’s featured noise and industrial rock veterans like Ministry and Jesus Lizard. Then the Smashing Pumpkins and Urge Overkill bubbled under with their flavors of rock. They led the way for many rock bands like Local H, Fig Dish and Triple Fast Action.  Finally the end of the 90’s the signature rock sound eminating from Chicago was the smart alternative country rock of Wilco.

All of this made up the extra special feature for this show. Chicago rocks!

One programming note: there will be no show next week.  The Fuzz Factory will resume it’s regular time the following Thursday, 10/21.  Thanks again for making this show a part of your evening.
